Yukon Do It Marathon 2011

I was the official race photographer. It's a very scenic marathon, and having a history in running, I really love photographing this event. Lot's of really great moments and awesome backdrops. Karen ran and we spent the weekend there.

The boys were really great in hanging out while Karen ran the Half Marathon and I photographed the races at Yukon Do It Marathon. I almost got my car towed because I parked on the course in front of a fire hydrant! I quickly moved when the tow truck came up!

Vibram Fivefingers Running: 3 Weeks

Three week report. All Fall I was running about once a week. Three weeks ago I started running 3 times a week, about 3 miles at a time. I am running in Brooks Ghost (pretty standard type of running shoe for me over the years) and the Vibram Fivefingers shoes. I ran twice a week, one mile at a time in the Fivefingers on the turf at White River High School. The third week I have run three miles twice in the Vibrams. When I first put them on at Fleet Feet, they immediately felt great. While at UW we used to do barefoot stride on the football field at Husky Stadium after some of our distance runs. That always felt really great. I quit running seriously 14 years ago because I had problems with my achilles tendons and we were starting a family. Anytime I have started running more than a few days a week, my achilles problems come back. This has been an out of the box idea on fixing my problem. Achilles' are good. Knock on wood. We'll see how it goes.

Carbonado Basketball 2011!

Marcus' basketball season has started! He played JV and swing on Varsity. Both teams won! Marcus played a lot in the J.V. game and got to play the last minute of the Varsity game. It was exciting to watch, I am very proud of Marcus being on the basketball team.

We used to do barefoot strides at the end of some workouts at UW. It always felt really great. I joined the cult of barefoot runners today, and ran a mile in these on the turf at WRHS. Feels great I have to say. More later, upon more barefoot running.

First Picture of Us!

This is the first picture of Karen and I together! I hobo-looking guy approached us with a Polaroid camera and asked us if he could take our picture, then I was surprised to find that it was a trap and he expected us to pay $5 for the picture! This photo is priceless to me now, thank you hobo-guy! It makes me want to do the same thing, take a Polaroid camera down to Seattle and make a little pocket money on couples in love, giving them a little treasure in the process.

NCAA Track National's, 1990

Easily my biggest accomplishment in running, qualifying for NCAA's in the 5000m in track at UW. 13:54. My parents paid for Karen to come out and watch. This was at Duke University.

Apartment in Des Moines

My second year at HCC, probably May of '88. May of 1988 was an incredibly pivotal time in my life. Big transitions, my life at Highline was ending, it was one of the best chapters of my life, really good friends there and my running really turned around. I gave up my long time dream of running at Oregon, and committed to Washington. That meant joining cousin Rich at UW, and beginning my life with Karen. This was the best decisions I ever made in my entire life. At UW I ran faster than I ever dreamed I could, our xc team was 4th at NCAA, (all of us were from Wa st., the highest finishing team with all it's members from the school's home state), we beat UO in our track dual my senior year, I loved living with Rich and being in Seattle. I can't even begin to say how great life was these first few years with Karen. It set up our life together.

This is one of my personal favorites in a long time. I really like to just walk around and take pictures of things, searching out details of things you don't normally take time to look at, arrange move things around a bit. This one just catches my involvement in the photography process, the process is the thing, not necessarily the final images. Olympus PEN E-P3. This is a great camera for this type of thing.

I am always concerned with losing tones and details. With these I can blindly hit the button and it obliterates things I would never allow myself to do. It seems o.k. this way for some reason.

Olympus PEN E-P3

I am testing cameras for a new curriculum at school, I am teaching a class about different cameras. This one is an Olympus PEN E-P3 w/17mm f2.8 lens. This is the 4/3's example in my class which is half size sensor compared to full frame. That makes the 17mm lens about 35mm on traditional slr film. I have really liked the art filter mode on this camera. You shoot live time in a style you might create in Photoshop or Aperture. I commonly do an oversaturation/high contrast look, and the PEN has that filter, basically. I like an over contrasted b/w look too sometimes and the PEN has that as well. They had a film grain to it also. I think it looks very digital though. It's grungy, and gets the point across though. I like the filters in the PEN E-P3. PE Mile, Carbonado

Marcus has been training twice a week to get "faster", we've been doing short intervals, hills and weights for about 3 weeks. I happened to be at Carbonado School as a guest speaker for their Careers class, and when I was done Marcus' PE class was starting their mile run. I was really proud of Marcus' effort while running. His time was 5:39. His friend Cory ran 6:10 in the first heat then ran every other lap with Marcus to help him with his time. Pretty cool sportsmanship! Looks like a couple future WRHS cross country boys for Coach Marlow.

This is my Photojournalism Club from WRHS. We are in the Homecoming Parade in Buckley. Pictures are a new version of the Polaroid concept, by FujiFilm. The camera is called FujiFilm Instax Mini 7S, and was really fun to use! Marcus and Wicket went along with us as well!
